Staff Engineering by Will Larson has long been a recommended book for anyone interested in pursuing a Staff+ role in tech. It lays out what the various Staff+ archetypes look like day to day, how the work differs from the management track, and what it actually takes to reach that level and stay effective once you're there.
It has been used to define the role at many companies, giving teams a shared vocabulary for expectations, promotion criteria, and career ladders. That makes it a great starting point for anyone interested in the track, whether you're trying to figure out if the path is right for you or you're already operating at that level and want to sharpen how you spend your time.
Tanya Reilly's book on Staff Engineering builds on Will's, so I'd recommend reading it after his.
